Barley news World: Barley production down almost 13 mln tonnes this year

World barley production is down almost 13 mln tonnes from last year, after crop failures in Canada and the U.S., and also smaller crops in the EU and Russia, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in November.

The largest barley buyer in 2021 is China, 8.6 mln tonnes have already been customs-cleared in Jan/Sept. Feed barley demand is brisk in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Algeria, Turkey, Iran, Iraq report very poor crops. Australia developed new feed barley markets in Southeast Asia, and – together with the EU – took over exports to Mexican and South American maltsters from Canada/the USA. Argentina seems to concentrate fully on the Chinese market.
